  1. Though I'm a long time fan of Harry Harrison's fiction, I found his "Stars & Stripes..." alternate history trilogy his weakest works, and I couldn't even finish the third one. A much better American Civil War alternate history trilogy is "Gettysburg", "Grant Comes East" and "Never Call Retreat" by Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen. I may have no time for Newt's politics, but has co-written 3 excellent novels here. After reading the first in mass market paperback, I bought the second in trade paperback rather than wait for the mass market edition, and bought the 3rd in hardback as soon as it came out.
